Coach Bonvicini will discuss the current status of U of A Women's Basketball, and encourage our annual excursions to see the women's team continue their winning streak.

The winningest coach in Arizona women’s basketball history, Joan Bonvicini has taken the program from obscurity into the national limelight. In 15 seasons, she has guided the Wildcats to eight postseason appearances, including a WNIT Championship. In 2004, the Wildcats won the Pac-10 regular-season title for the first time ever.

Bonvicini has produced one All-American, five honorable mention All-Americans, a Pac-10 Player of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, 22 All-Pac-10 honorees, 16 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team choices and 14 Academic All-Pac-10 selections.

Bonvicini has three times been a finalist for the Naismith and Associated Press College Coach of the Year Awards and was recently named to the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame. She was also the 1998 WBCA Region 8 and Pac-10 Coach of the Year.

Bonvicini came to Arizona after 12 years at Long Beach State, where she went 325-71 (.820). Her teams made 10-straight NCAA Tournaments, including Final Four appearances during the 1987 and ’88 seasons.

Bonvicini began her coaching career upon graduation from Southern Connecticut State. She served as an assistant at Cal Poly-Pomona. From there, she was hired as an assistant at Long Beach State and after two years, at age 25, was promoted to head coach.

February 7, 2007 -- Dr. Yar Petryszyn

The Amazon

Dr. Yar Petryszyn, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the U of A, without any doubt, gets our vote as our most popular speaker in the last 10 years. He has talked to us about his journey to the North Pole on a Russian Nuclear Icebreaker, the Natural History of East Africa, the Galapagos, and most recently, about his visit to the Antarctica. He is back this time to talk about his visit to the Amazon, and, as we already know, will once again run out of time. If you haven't heard him, hold your coffee to one cup because you won't want to miss one word of what he has to say.
